Glenn Nelson believes in the power of education and wants to share this belief with students to come.
While he earned his Master’s in Organizational Leadership, his educational journey is far from over.
The “proud father” and graduate is planning on earning his PhD in Organizational Psychology so that he can teach at the university level and “mold minds in a fun, life-changing way.”
We spoke with Nelson about earning his master’s online and the advice he has for future students.
Q. Tell us about your background.
I am originally from Los Angeles, CA but have lived and worked in various parts of the U.S. I am a proud father and will be expecting my first grandchild in April. For 16 years, I worked in the media in various capacities.
Q. What were the most important factors in your decision to choose Florida Tech?
The class size, the online classes and the feedback I received from working professionals was a major factor in my decision.
Q. How will your Florida Tech degree make a difference in your career?
I believe education is important and this degree, in particular, allows me to further my growth and development in the workplace.
Q. Do you have any future plans with your degree?
I plan on pursuing my Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology in the near future. I would like to use it to teach on a University level and mold minds in a fun, life-changing way.
Q. What surprised you most about taking an online program?
There was little room for error during these courses. Contrary to what people may believe regarding online courses, my program was a challenging experience and required much thought and preparation before submitting an assignment.
Q. What advice would you give other students who are considering enrolling in the program?
Any student who wants to embark on this journey should make sure they are disciplined. The mind has to be strong enough to think clearly and express itself coherently at the highest level regardless of what is going on in your everyday life.
Get to know your fellow classmates. It will come in handy in all of your classes as you will “see” them more often than you realize. Don’t be afraid to interact. Why pay for classes and not gain relationships from them?
Q. What was the most challenging part of your student journey?
There were times when I didn’t believe I would finish, but knew that I had come too far to quit or be derailed in any manner.
Q. Who or what inspires you to succeed?
My children inspire me to do more and, in turn, I inspire them to go beyond what I achieve in life. Where they are at their respective ages makes me proud even though my shortcomings as a father could have affected them in a different manner.
Q. What is one fun fact about you?
I am a collector of 1st edition books and magazines. To date, I have at least 55 of these pieces of history in my collection!
My favorite 1st edition book would have to be Stuart Little by E.B. White from 1945. I read the book when I was a child and think it is phenomenal! Since most things are moving to the digital realm, it is all the more important to me to be able to pass these pieces of history along to my offspring.
