Travis Hembree, BA in Management, Class of 2019

Military man, musician and, now, management degree holder.

Travis Hembree has lived a diverse life.

After joining the Navy and serving in various operations in the Middle East, Hembree moved to a career in auditing and accounting. He chose to earn his BA in Management from Florida Tech due to the university’s reputation as well as the online programs offered:

“I chose Florida Tech because of its value and numerous accolades and rankings. Also, it offered the degree I was interested in.”

He graduated magna cum laude in Spring of 2019. We spoke with Hembree about his personal, professional and musical background as well as his experience in the program.

Q. Tell us about your background.

I live in St. Augustine, Florida (AKA the Oldest City), but I was raised in Maryville, TN with my dad and brother. I moved to St. Augustine after high school and then joined the Navy. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Navy and was proud to serve as a “sand sailor” in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and Operation New Dawn (OND). Currently, I work for our county’s government, and I understand the importance of a college education as it provides more opportunities in a competitive world.

I also play in a band and enjoy hanging out with my lovely wife Sam and beautiful (Chiweenie) daughter Lola.

Q. How will your Florida Tech degree make a difference in your career?

My Florida Tech degree adds more value to me as an employee.

Q. Do you have any future plans with your degree?

I see higher education and more certifications in the future.

Q. What surprised you most about taking an online program?

I was surprised at how much interaction I had with my classmates and professors. The professors were very helpful, and I got to know a lot of my classmates throughout the program.

Q. What was your favorite class and why?

Integrated Arts was my favorite elective because it enabled me to be creative and explore different art forms. My favorite business class was Business Research because it was super challenging and the professor provided awesome feedback.

Q. What was your most valuable takeaway from the program?

The program was centered on business management, but it also provided instruction in leadership, communication and other critical business skills.

Q. What advice would you give other students who are considering enrolling in the program?

Finish all your assignments and never give up! You can do it!

Q. Who has been your support system?

My wife, family and friends.

Q. What was the most challenging part of your student journey?

Keeping a consistent and healthy balance between life, work and school.

Q. Who or what inspires you to succeed?

The future inspires me to succeed. I want everyone to be happy, healthy and successful.

Q. What is one fun fact about you?

I survived a traumatic brain injury when I was 15 years old. I was in coma for a while. When I woke up, I could suddenly play piano. Well, that’s how I like to remember it, anyway!

Currently, I play accordion and washboard in my band, but over the last 15 years, I have played drums, keyboard, and even pots and pans.
